Workflow in Unreal Engine

In Unreal Engine, most PBR textures pack three single-channel maps (AO, roughness, metallic) into one RGB texture called an ORM texture — this halves VRAM cost compared to shipping three separate maps. The engine's Material Editor expects this format by default. For terrain or large-surface materials, always use the LandscapeLayerCoords or WorldPosition-based UVs rather than direct UV coordinates, which keeps the pattern scale consistent regardless of polygon size. For mobile or Quest targets, stick to 1024-pixel textures compressed to ASTC — 4K textures blow the memory budget on lower-end devices even when they look identical after compression.

Quality notes for noise & organic textures

Noise and natural textures (cloud, grass, ice, sand, terrain) tolerate heavy tiling better than other categories because the human eye does not pattern-match on irregular noise. This makes them excellent for very large surfaces. For ground materials in 3D scenes, tile at three to ten repeats across the surface — this keeps detail readable at ground level without obvious seams. For sky materials, use a larger tile count to avoid visible repetition at wide viewing angles.

Unreal Engine × Noise & Organic specifics

Noise textures plug into Unreal's Landscape Grass Type system to drive where grass, rocks, and foliage spawn across terrain. They also work as inputs to the Material Function library for procedural weathering and dirt overlays on any material. For performance, pre-bake noise texture sampling into static masks rather than evaluating at runtime per frame.
